Freight dwells for hours rather than weeks, every consignment has its own cutoff, and a truck that is down at four in the afternoon costs a departure rather than an hour of productivity. That shapes the equipment differently from a warehouse, and in ways that are not obvious from a spec sheet.

Speed and Availability Beat Capacity

In distribution, a truck is specified to move the most weight per hour economically. In forwarding, the constraint is almost never weight — it is the number of moves before a cutoff, and the certainty that the truck will be working when the moves have to happen.

That leads to a slightly different spec: capacity headroom rather than capacity at the limit, good visibility, responsive controls, and a maintenance posture built around preventing failures rather than responding quickly to them. Indoor-Outdoor Is the Normal Case

Most forwarder work crosses between a dock face, an indoor staging area and a yard, frequently within a single move. That pattern usually points to LP internal combustion rather than electric: refuelling takes minutes, the truck is unaffected by weather, and pneumatic or solid-pneumatic tires handle the transition between surfaces.

Where an operation is genuinely enclosed — a bonded room, a sorting hall — electric remains the better answer, and plenty of buildings run both.

Irregular Freight Is the Defining Problem

Air freight does not arrive in tidy pallet-sized units. Unit load devices, crated machinery, aerospace parts, long items, awkward shapes and pieces that will not sit square on forks are all normal.

The attachments that matter most here:

  • Fork positioners — because load widths vary constantly and adjusting by hand does not happen in practice
  • Side-shifters — fine alignment without repositioning the truck, which matters in a crowded staging area
  • Booms or jibs — for suspended loads that cannot sit on forks
  • Longer forks or extensions — used carefully, with the derating understood

Capacity derating from attachments matters more here than in a warehouse, because the loads are already awkward. Specify the truck with the attachment fitted, not without it.

Aisle Width and Staging Layout

Narrow aisles are a warehouse optimisation. In a forwarder building they are usually a mistake. Equipment moves constantly, often under time pressure, frequently with several trucks working the same space — and the collision rate in tight aisles is a real cost in damaged freight and damaged trucks.

Generous working room is worth more than the floor it consumes, and the layout should follow the outbound sort rather than maximise storage. The rack side of that is handled by our sibling site, Dulles Pallet Racking; the equipment side is simply that trucks need room to work fast safely.

Rental for Seasonal Peaks

Air freight volume is seasonal, and it is one of the clearest rental cases in this corridor. Carrying peak-season truck count year-round means paying for and maintaining equipment that is idle most of the year.

Renting the difference for the peak — delivered, serviced for the term, collected afterwards — is straightforwardly cheaper. It also gives you a relationship in place for the other rental case: covering a fleet truck that goes down during a period when downtime is least affordable.

Operator Certification in This Environment

Two things worth flagging.

Training must reflect workplace conditions. OSHA 1910.178 requires the practical evaluation to address the actual site — and a busy cargo dock with multiple trucks, pedestrian traffic, tight staging and time pressure is a meaningfully different environment from a quiet warehouse aisle. Training conducted elsewhere on unfamiliar equipment does not cover it well.

Certification is specific to truck type. Operations here frequently run counterbalance trucks and powered pallet jacks, and sometimes telehandlers for yard work. Each is a separate class requiring its own training and evaluation.

Service Posture

Planned maintenance matters more in time-critical operations than anywhere else, precisely because the cost of unplanned downtime is highest. Intervals should be set against actual hours — cargo operations accumulate them quickly — and the daily pre-shift check genuinely has to happen rather than being signed off in batches.

Where an operation cannot tolerate a truck being out of service, the practical answer is a service relationship that includes a replacement unit rather than one that promises a fast repair.

  2. Whether the truck works indoors, outdoors or both, and roughly what split
  3. Peak cutoff pattern — when the pressure actually falls
  4. Staging layout and the tightest point the truck must negotiate
  5. Whether any part of the operation is bonded or access-controlled
